Carry your BibTeX libraries with you on your iPad and iPhone!
A BibTeX library is a collection of bibliographic references (papers, books, reports, etc.) designed to work with the LaTeX typesetting system. Each library is stored in a specially formatted text file (typically ending in .bib), which you can create using your preferred text editor.
The References app offers a convenient way to browse and interact with your BibTeX libraries. You can scroll, search, follow links, and view file attachments. The app provides the following features:
- The app generates links from DOIs, MathSciNet references, ACM IDs, and URLs.
- The app recognizes basic LaTeX formatting. If your titles or abstracts include markup or mathematical expressions (in simple LaTeX format), the app can display them correctly.
- If you've used BibDesk or JabRef to build your library, the app can display your file attachments (e.g., attached PDFs).
- You can access references categorized by keywords if you utilize the Keywords field in your BibTeX libraries. Additionally, you can view your smart/static groups from BibDesk and dynamic/static groups from JabRef.
- The app supports both BibLaTeX libraries and classic BibTeX.
The References app allows you to open BibTeX libraries from any location on your device. You can utilize iCloud Drive to synchronize them across your devices.
FILE ATTACHMENTS:
To view file attachments like PDFs, the file path should be included in the respective entry in your BibTeX library. This can be accomplished using Bdsk-File-* fields (as in BibDesk) or the plain text File field (as in JabRef). If you are manually creating your BibTeX files, simply add a File field specifying the attachment's location, for example, File = {../PDFs/foo.pdf}.
All paths are relative to the location of your BibTeX library. For instance, if your BibTeX library is located at Documents/BibTeX/papers.bib and an attachment is encoded as ../PDFs/foo.pdf, then the app will search for the file at Documents/PDFs/foo.pdf. If your attachments are stored elsewhere, you can add their location as a linked folder in the app for easy access.
You can view attachments from various sources like Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Nextcloud or OneDrive (all iOS versions), iCloud Drive, or any location on your iPhone/iPad (iOS 13+ only). In case you encounter difficulties viewing attachments from a third-party provider, contact the References developer for assistance.
